On the weekend of the 5th-6th of November 2005, we held the Inaugural ASA Junior Seminar and championships, and it’s an event that won’t be forgotten for some time. The kids were treated to some fantastic kata training by Sensei’s Steven Xepapas, Michael Graf, Monica Brookes and myself, assissted by a host of other blackbelts including Tim Seirlis and Scott Kell.

There were three groups teaching at any one time and rotating after approx 30 min with each Sensei. Sensei Michael and Monica occupied our new competition mats, teaching kata bunkai (application). The other senseis taught kata in detail and applying a kata to tournament reality.

The Saturday afternoon session comprised of Kumite scoring techniques, kumite confidence and tournament approach. Toward the end of the session, we gathered all students around the competition mats, and called a couple of our experienced tournament regulars to demonstrate target areas and boundary lines and we explained the point system.

After the session, the kids were exhausted and were treated to late afternoon lunch and drinks. Shortly after, the long awaited surprise made his way into the room. Yes, the clown entered and began to enthral his young audience with magic, comedy and humour. The kids were ecstatic and so were the parents. When the clown announced it was time to go, I thought we were going to have a riot as the kids were having way too much fun. Anyway, the clown finally finished his show and left in one piece.

The Tournament

Competition day is always a nervous one, not only for the beginners, but also for the regular competitors. There was some outstanding kumite bouts and excellent kata performance, although nerves took control for some during kata. The standard was clearly better than last year and with the introduction of kumite for the 5, 6 and 7 year old group, we are bound to have a huge range of competitors at every competition.

We have received numerous emails of thanks and praise for the event and many parents and students have been asking about further Junior seminars and Tournaments. This tournament was run by the ASA (Australian Shotokan Alliance). This alliance is represented by all heads of styles including Sensei Steven Xepapas from Tasmania, Senseis Michael Graf and Monica Brookes from Miranda and Caringbah and myself, from Randwick and Fairfield. This event, at this stage, will be an annual event and we strongly recommend you participate in tournaments that are organised by the NSW Karate Federation. We have many students who participate at every tournament and we strongly support them. If you would like to know where and when the NSWKF tournaments are held in 2006, please contact your sensei.

Lastly, I'd like to send out a big thank you for all those who officiated and all the helpers.

Paul Fenech Sensei
