Membership

To become a member of Bukon Shotokan Karate-Do, we encourage you to try a few classes first. Once you have experienced one of our exciting training sessions, you will be given a membership form to fill in. Once you submit the form you will be affiliated with Bukon Shotokan Karate-Do and be given a lifetime membership. You can also download this form (PDF 204kB) and print it yourself.

What’s involved?

You will attend weekly classes with our existing students and undergo gradings to assess your progress.

It will take about 5 years for an adult to earn their black belt, training several times a week. For kids this will take longer.

How much does it cost?

Our classes are based on a 3 month term and you pay for the term in advance, allowing us to reduce the fees and avoid the hassles of collecting money at each class.

The Administration Secretary, who is present at most classes, can tell you the fees and give you a membership form.

Tournaments and seminars typically cost about $30 per day, but these are entirely optional, although students are encouraged to compete at least 2 times a year.

Equipment

For beginners we have a Starters Pack, which is included in your membership fees. This pack contains:

  • Gi (Karate jacket and pants)
  • Belt
  • Mitts (Gloves used for sparring. Available in small, medium or large)
  • Bukon Shotokan badge
  • Grading curriculum handbook (also available online)

Additional equipment that may be needed later on includes:

  • Additional belts (each major change in rank will require a new belt)
  • Mouth guard (to protect teeth)
  • Shin pads (only for tournaments)
  • Groin guard (for boys/men - only for tournaments)
  • Breast guard (for girls/women - only for tournaments)

All equipment can be provided through Bukon Shotokan. Prices are available through the Administration Secretary who is present at most classes.
