"Self defence" can be interpreted in many ways. At Bukon Shotokan Karate-Do we are firm believers in preventative action rather than reaction to an attack. For example, it is better defuse an argument or tense situation, rather than having to resort to physical action to defend yourself once the situation is much worse. Master Gichin Funakoshi, the father of Shotokan Karate highlighted this point above all else.
The word karate means "empty hand". This is because there is a fundamental flaw in the use of weapons for self defence; you will be vulnerable when faced with a situation where you do not have your weapon. A skilled martial artist has no reliance on weapons, and can even remove an opponent’s weapon then use it against them. With training, you become the weapon.
But technical skill is only one part of karate, we believe that you must also begin with an empty mind; a blank canvas on which the art of karate can be crafted. In Shotokan karate, we first teach discipline, respect and control before you can begin technical training. This is often difficult to master in itself and requires repetitious training and patience.
Our self defence classes are designed to provide real-world techniques, both mental and physical, that will allow the student to protect themselves.
